Mukul Rohatgi
Mukul Rohatgi, Senior Advocate, Supreme Court of India, is equally highly regarded in political, constitutional and corporate litigation. One of the busiest lawyers in the Supreme Court, he has appeared in litigation across constitutional law, commercial and corporate law, criminal law, property law, arbitration law, personal law, maritime law, anti-dumping, taxation, armed forces, service law and intellectual property law including patents, trademarks, copyright and industrial designs.
Born on August 17, 1955, Mr Rohatgi was admitted to the rolls of the Bar Council of Delhi as an Advocate in May 1978. He was designated as a Senior Advocate by the Delhi High Court in 1994, at a relatively young age of 39 years. In November 1999, he came to be appointed as an Additional Solicitor General of India by the Government of India; the tenure ending only in May 2004 with a change in Government. As a law officer of the Government of India, he handled myriad matters in the Supreme Court and various High Courts, not only for the Union Government but also various State Governments and Public Sector Enterprises. In June 2014, he was appointed as the Attorney General for India.
Mr Rohatgi has been invited to attend and present papers at various international law seminars and conferences. In 2006, he was chosen by the then Chief Justice of India, to be part of the Indian delegation at the Indo-British Legal Forum, held in Scotland; where he presented a paper titled, “Impact of Environmental Law on Human Rights”. He was invited to attend the Indo-Australian Legal Forum in March 2015 at Canberra, Australia by the Government of Australia and the High Court of Australia, the highest court of the land. He was invited to participate in the 13th Meeting of the Prosecutors General of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Member States hosted by the Republic of Kazakhstan in August 2015 in Astana.
Mr Rohatgi completed his Commerce (Honors) course from Delhi University in 1975 and went on to obtain his LLB degree from Bombay University in 1978. He was conferred a Doctorate in Laws by the Fakir Mohan University, Odisha, in 2011. He was also conferred Doctor of Laws (LLD) – Honoris Causa by the Amity University, UP, in November 2016.
Mr Rohatgi finds mention as a Notable Practitioner by Chambers & Partners and as a leading Senior Counsel by Legal 500. In January 2010, leading Indian daily, The Times of India, mentioned him in a list entitled “India’s Top 10 Lawyers”. He was conferred the National Law Day Award in 2008 by the Honourable Prime Minister of India with a citation for his erudition and vast experience in the practice of unflinching support for the basic rights guaranteed under the Constitution. He also featured as a “Legal Eagle” in a book called Legal Eagles (Stories of the top seven Indian lawyers) published in September 2015.
